Ocean Park Announces Loss of a Female Chinese Giant Salamander

2025-12-15

Ocean Park is sad to announce the passing of its 17-year-old female Chinese giant salamander, Tango, on 15 December 2025.

Tango was observed with red patches on her skin and loss in appetite yesterday afternoon, and her abdomen appeared noticeably swollen. In addition to weak heartbeats, an ultrasound scan revealed that there were abnormal masses throughout her liver and a severe buildup of fluid in her body cavity. After blood tests and thorough evaluation, the Park’s veterinary team determined that euthanasia was the most humane option in light of Tango’s rapidly deteriorating condition and poor prognosis.

Tango arrived at Ocean Park in October 2011. There are currently two Chinese giant salamanders residing in the Park. Over the years, they have helped visitors learn about the characteristics of their species and the importance of protecting freshwater habitats.
